Dismantle launches through Warren Publishing March 2024

It’s no secret that the bond between mothers and their daughters can be complex, multifaceted, and, at times, tumultuous. Nevertheless, as a young woman grows and discovers who she is, she often does so with the expectation that her mother will serve as a guiding, supporting force, leading both women to shape each other’s lives in profound ways. But what if the roles were reversed? What if a daughter were unwillingly thrust into participating in her mother’s journey of self-discovery? How would this unconventional dynamic shape the trajectory of their lives? Angie Kiehne’s memoir, Dismantle, published by Warren Publishing, explores this role reversal and more.

In Dismantle, Kiehne takes readers on her youth journey from ages ten to
eighteen and details the chaos that ensued when her family abruptly traded
a serene life at an ashram in Vermont for an unpredictable one in the
fast-paced city of Seattle. In the aftermath following her parents’ divorce,
Kiehne’s mother traded her modest, repressed lifestyle for one of sexual
liberation and promiscuity, and failed to serve as a positive maternal role
model in her children’s lives. Her father subsequently disowned his
children, refusing to have anything to do with her mother and the lifestyle
she chose, leaving the kids abandoned in chaos.

According to Kiehne, the book “charts the alarming transformation my
mother went through, both in appearance and personality at the same time
I entered puberty. Her evolution not only overshadowed my own
development but hijacked my childhood.” Kiehne became a caretaker for
her siblings and herself as she shouldered the responsibilities of the
household.

“I chose to process my grief by analyzing the events of my past and turning
them into a story. I turned my pain into art.” After encouragement and
support from her sister, Kiehne decided to share her story as a part of her
healing process and to help others believe in, and advocate for, a better
future. Kiehne takes readers with her along her journey hoping they will
come away “inspired about the resiliency of the human spirit.”

Angie Kiehne’s Dismantle is a must-read for anyone seeking insight into the
complexities of childhood trauma and family relationships.
